These icons are hand painted using the traditional method of egg tempera on gessoed panels. When working with tempera, I grind many of my pigments and combine them with egg yolk, which acts as a binding agent. The meditative repetition of the application of many transparent layers of egg tempera produces a luminosity and wonderful depth to the painted surface.
